Summer is coming once again – and that means so is
How can we think about Camp Lots-of-Fun in the middle of a pandemic?
If you were one of the children in our program going through homelessness, or one of their parents, the question would be, “How could you not?”
For the parents in our programs, Camp meets a critical need by filling the gap in daycare when most camps close and school has yet to begin. There is no charge to leave their children in competent, caring hands at Camp while they go to work. Kids are happy (and tired!) when they return home – an added bonus for parents after a long day.
For the children, Camp means even more. It provides fun activities and exciting experiences that they wouldn’t normally have – like the opportunity to explore a worm bin, learn a magic trick, see a dance troupe or groom a horse! What’s more, campers reunite with friends and make new connections with kids who have the same history of trauma and loss. Caring volunteer counselors provide plenty of one-on-one attention in an atmosphere free from the judgment, guilt and shame that often accompanies being without a place to live.
This year, our kids need Camp more than ever. We have all sheltered in place during this pandemic. But for children who have already experienced trauma in their lives, this time of isolation has been extremely difficult. If there was ever a time when comfort and healing was needed – as well as the freedom to play with other children, outside in the fresh air, THIS IS IT!
For all of these reasons, we are planning to provide Camp Lots-of-Fun in late August. We are not exactly sure what it will look like this year, but we do know that our campers will be safe and have two weeks to just be kids again – leaving the stress of homelessness and COVID-19 behind as they run, jump, learn, giggle, laugh and PLAY!
We invite you to be a part of making Camp Lots-of-Fun happen for the kids of Family Promise this year. Your donation will help ensure that these children have a fun-filled experience that is safe for our campers, volunteer counselors and staff. Thank you!
