Camp Lots-of-Fun is Family Promise’s annual two-week day camp for kids ages 5-12 in our shelter and support programs, as well as children experiencing homelessness or housing instability that are referred to us from other organizations in Bergen County.
Each day is a new adventure at Camp Lots-of-Fun. Every morning, our campers arrive eager to enjoy fun, new experiences like visits to a barn for therapy ponies, interactive magic shows, scavenger hunts, a performance by a dance troupe, and more! A healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack are provided, and STEM, art, and literacy exercises are incorporated into daily activities. The children find comfort in reuniting with old friends and making new connections with kids who have the same history of trauma and loss in an atmosphere free from the judgement, guilt, and shame that often accompanies being without a place to live. What’s more, this program meets a critical need for homeless working families by filling the gap in daycare before the new school year begins.
Campers also benefit from enthusiastic, compassionate teen counselors, who provide them with the one-on-one attention that they deserve. Formerly a volunteer position, in 2021 we began to offer paid stipends in an effort to open employment opportunities to high school students who must work during the summer to earn an income. This also helps ensure diversity among our staff, giving campers role models that reflect their families and communities.
But most of all, Camp Lots-of-Fun gives children the chance to learn, laugh, and play—and enjoy the magic of just being a kid!
